Oh, so, thoughts on The Great Gatsby.
I thought it was awesome. I didn’t think it was perfect, but it was a very enjoyable movie, very well cast, and it stayed pretty true to the book, which is basically everything I hope for in these things. And I actually like Baz Luhrmann, so there’s that. I kind of want to ask the people who kept saying, “No, it completely missed the point,” what they think this ever elusive point of the book was, because it was pretty hard to miss, and the movie screamed it every bit as much as the book.
There’s literally a green light, and Gatsby pretty much makes grabby hands for it. The “so we beat on” lines are actually spelled out across the screen towards the end. Like, okay, the light and Daisy and all that, those are metaphorical, but it’s a pretty screaming metaphor for the American dream.
